Apple, a different approach to SL?

Thursday, November 23 2006

Following rumors in-world and on the web, I teleported to Skegemog/241/203/111/ to find out about Apple opening in Second Life.

After some difficulties, quite heavy lag, avatar stuck and the need to reboot SL, I managed to have a quick view of the whole thing, from below. There where two big black cube with a white Apple logo. That was what I had the chance to see, but it wasn't possible to actually reach the specific place. I wasn't able to take any shot, since SL was very slow, my avatar wasn't moving and teleport impossible. By the way this is a situation happening more and more lately... but this another topic that will need a different post.

Back again and this time I had more luck, I teleported directly on the same small region, that is the actual shop. A shop 'cos this is what this space looks is going to be. Works are at the very beginning, this time the two big black cube disappeared, no other Apple logo was around.

Again it wasn't possible to move into the space, at the end of it an avatar (you see him in the following images) responding at the name of Apple Revolution. This guy/girl didn't answer to my attempts of chatting with, not even responding to the environment around that made me think he was probably away.

What makes me think this is just a private shop, with (maybe?) Apple products (which ones?) on sale. The whole thing, I have to say, looks quite messy. In terms of brand management both the location choosen (again, look at the following photos) and the way the whole thing is being managed. The lowest point being reached with a donation box, at the end of the place:

If you love Apple, Please donate L$
Right click and select Pay to help keep my Apple store going.

The day after

Yea, I was there last night. There was a pretty big group of us and he kept fidling with the video stream. The day after is pretty fishy. There are no Apple logo's any longer. The T-Shirts (selling for 5 L$ each) are gone as well. The host, Apple Revolution, no longer has anything on his profile indicating apple shops are comming in December. He wiped it clean. Also, the apple logo for his profile picture is also gone. The interesting part is that he has payment information on file - so it may be easier to hold him responsible if this is a scam.

Obviously, not Apple...

... but just a silly fan of Apple doing their best to capture some attention and get some L$...

Sadly, this helps little to promote Apple in any way, and only eventually to scare off some Apple marketeers that might feel daunted by the way people simply use their brand name to make a few L$.

Well, IBM, Dell, Intel, Sun are all in SL these days. Hopefully, when Apple gets interested in SL, they'll come with a bang :)

Waiting for that bang

We are all waiting for that bang, ain't we?
