Skip to contentOral-B Pulsar: did they know it's for users (of this planet)?
Just a personal opinion on how product design might just forget about the users, and the world we're currently living in.
Something get lost in the way
The Oral-B Pulsar™ is a toothbrush. Quoting the product web site:
Pulsar is the only manual toothbrush with revolutionary MicroPulse™ bristles that independently pivot back and forth to penetrate deep between teeth (...)
Ok, fair enough. Basically is a product that uses a vibrating technology (like your mobile vibrating ringtone, or your video game pad, or your razor blade, or whatever, ehm, you have with the bzzzzz option). The problem is nobody really thought of some basic things during the product's design process.
Handle with care
First problem for the user, that is the guy's washing his teeth early in the morning and late at night, at least. Chances are you are cleaning your teeth in your home bathroom, you leave your toothbrush on the lavatory sink, or in a glass, or some kind of can you are using to put your toothbrushes and paste in. For clean and precise that you could be, water will lay on the bottom of the can, or be left on the sink.
Now, the guys that projected the Oral-B Pulsar™ tool chose to make a rubber and carved handle, resulting in a perfect place for the water to collect and stay. See the following images.
And it's not a matter of years of use, the toothbrush displayed has been used for about 3 months; the following image is the toothbrush head.
Change the brush OR save the planet?
Second problem, for the user and the rest of the world. It's very likely you'll have to change the toothbrush before the battery, a 1,5 volts AAA alkaline battery, runs out. The fact is that you won't be able to just change the head, the actual brush. You'll have instead to get rid of the whole thing, you can save the battery. But how many people out there will think of doing this? And what about the battery, then? Do they have another appliance to use it with? Nevertheless, if you buy another toothbrush you have to buy it with its own battery.
