No one owns the story. The rise of Vinny and the free fall of traditional journalism

Sunday, March 2 2008

About 70% of Americans think traditional journalism is out of touch with them. This is the result of an online poll conducted by We Media/Zogby Interactive (Two thirds of Americans View Traditional Journalism as 'Out of Touch').

For 48% of the interviewed the primary source of news and informations is Internet, this is a 40% increase from a year before. This percentage is higher (55%) for those aged 18 to 29, lower (35%) for those aged more than 65. Television account as 29% of the interviewed primary source for news, radio is at 11%, newspapers at 10%.

Evolution of the news

It's not just the paper suffering from the web competition, TV journalism (once the big winner) is falling fast and can't even pretend to defend some supposed, intrinsical, quality of the media as newspapers sometimes pretend to. What are the factors concurring to create this situation? Some of them are technological related, some are just a matter of content.

Everywhere, anywhere, not filtered. This is what people is looking in news: they want to have the news right then when the fact is happening, and right then wherever they are (home, train commuting, city shopping, etc.). Also they do want the raw thing, they are tired of the filters imposed by news corporations, because of their sponsor interests, because of their political friends. They do not care if the camera is shaking, the images are not digital 16:9 television, or the audio is crap. The more the news looks raw and unfinished, the more it is real.

An interesting Media Intelligence Report is available on iFocos web site, have a look to read more on We Media and the status of media in today world.
